What’s in a NDIS Behaviour Support Plan: How It Helps You Thrive

NDIS Behaviour Support Plan in Brisbane with practitioner, participant and carer planning together

Every person deserves to feel safe, respected and supported in the way they live their life.

For many NDIS participants, an NDIS Behaviour Support Plan is one of the most important tools in achieving that goal. Yet the process can sometimes feel confusing or clinical.

At Behaviour Collaborations, we take the time to explain what a plan is, what it includes, and how it supports wellbeing and independence. Understanding these elements helps families, carers and support teams work together with confidence and compassion.

Understanding the purpose of a Behaviour Support Plan

A Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) is a positive, person-centred document designed to improve quality of life. It focuses on understanding the function of behaviour, why it occurs and what need it meets, so we can build strategies that are supportive rather than restrictive.

The plan helps everyone involved to respond consistently, reduce stress and create environments where the person can thrive. At its heart, it is about dignity, safety and connection, not control.

Who can create an NDIS Behaviour Support Plan?

Only behaviour support practitioners considered suitable by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission can develop a behaviour support plan. Practitioners are qualified professionals who work under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission framework. They assess, design and review plans in line with best-practice standards, always prioritising the person’s rights and wellbeing.

At Behaviour Collaborations, our practitioners blend professional expertise with lived experience. We work in partnership with participants, families and support coordinators to ensure every plan feels personal, realistic and achievable.

What’s included in a Behaviour Support Plan?

Every plan is unique because every person’s story is unique. However, there are key sections that guide the process and keep everyone on the same page. See below:

1. Understanding Behaviour

The plan begins with a functional assessment that looks at what triggers behaviours of concern and what purpose they serve.

This section builds understanding by recognising that behaviour is communication, not defiance. We may complete assessments, speak with other key stakeholders, record some behaviours and conduct some observations. All the information we gather helps us make an accurate assessment.

2. Personal Goals

Goals are developed collaboratively with the participant and their support network. They might include building communication skills, feeling safe in social settings or increasing independence.

Each goal directly improves the person’s quality of life. Our goals are achievable and work with participants, families, and carers to ensure we set appropriate goals that will build capacity and reduce behaviours of concern.

3. Proactive Strategies

These are the everyday supports that help prevent distress. They might include changes to routines, sensory adjustments or positive reinforcement techniques.

The aim is to create predictable, calm and supportive environments that enhance strengths and skills, working from a positive approach to behaviour change.

4. Response and Safety Strategies

Sometimes situations become overwhelming. This section explains how to respond safely and respectfully if distress occurs, ensuring the person’s dignity and well-being are always protected.

Who cares for the carer? At Behaviour Collaborations, we include self-care strategies to help you maintain care for as long as possible, so you do not burn out.

5. Skill Development

A good plan includes support for learning new skills such as communication, coping and social interaction. These skills empower the person to express needs in positive ways and build confidence over time.

At Behaviour Collaborations, we analyse where skill development can be best targeted and develop plans to ensure the participant is living their life with opportunities to participate.

6. Team Roles and Review Process

Behaviour Support is a team effort. The plan outlines who does what, how progress is measured and when reviews occur. Regular reviews keep strategies relevant and responsive to the person’s changing needs.

7. Training and Implementation

We work closely with anyone who is implementing our Positive Behaviour Support Plan, and we also provide training on all the strategies we develop, ensuring we upskill anyone who needs it. Training can be one-off or ongoing. We also encourage debriefing where possible.

Collaboration makes all the difference

Behaviour change does not happen in isolation. It happens when everyone involved feels heard, supported and informed.

At Behaviour Collaborations, we believe the best outcomes come from genuine partnership between participants, families, practitioners and support teams. By sharing insights and celebrating small wins together, we build consistency, trust and long-term success.

What happens after the NDIS Behaviour Support Plan is developed?

Once the plan is completed, it becomes a living document. Our practitioners continue to support participants and their teams in implementing strategies, monitoring progress, and updating goals.

We stay involved, offering guidance and encouragement as new challenges and achievements arise. A well-supported plan is not just about reducing behaviours. It is about building capacity, confidence and connection. Turning a plan into that kind of ongoing, everyday support is a process in itself. Our guide on behaviour support plan implementation looks at why that step often takes teamwork, and what helps it succeed.

Why this matters

When behaviour support is done with empathy and understanding, it can change lives. It can help families feel calmer, support workers feel more confident, and participants feel empowered to express themselves safely and independently. Every plan reflects respect for the person, their choices, and their potential.

Our commitment to our clients and families

An NDIS Behaviour Support Plan is more than paperwork – it is a shared promise to work together towards positive, meaningful change.
